Play vs. Film

In this series, I compare some of my favorite films with the stage works on which they are based. There are so many films based on novels, and much has been written about them (witness all the Jane Austen-based features and TV adaptations, as well as the Brontës), but I haven't seen a lot written about movies that are based on stage works, except of course, Shakespeare—which I'll steer clear of. I will also try to avoid very recent films, such as Doubt and Dancing at Lughnasa, and musicals such as Les Misérables. Instead, I intend to focus on older, classic films, whose plays they are based on are perhaps less frequently staged today and are therefore less familiar to the public.
